Last weekend the LifeChange recovery community honored two outstanding residents, Dani Nay and Dan Torgeson (aka "Dan T.") Dani completed the Cabinet (or third level) of LifeChange and is going on to study to be a nurse.

Dan T. is moving up to the Council (or 4th level) in LifeChange. Council members agree to serve as leaders of the LifeChange community to teach and mentor other residents.

First ever "Beat the Heat" event!

Our first ever "Beat the Heat" event is happening today!

Even before the event kicked off, a large line formed in front of the Mission

Our friends from Cafe Delirium in Gresham made specialty coffee drinks for our guests

In addition to coffee, pastries and ice cream were served. Guests could also receive free summer clothing.

Thanks to all who helped make the first ever "Beat the Heat" event a success!

Mother and Son find recovery in LifeChange

Last Saturday, Union Gospel Mission's LifeChange recovery residents, staff and friends gathered for a barbeque to celebrate Thomas Ek's completion of LifeChange. What made the event extra special was Kim, Thomas' mother, was there. It was almost 8 years ago to the day that Kim herself graduated from LifeChange. (Kim and Thomas are pictured at left)

Kim came to the Mission in the late 90s, after years of alcohol and meth abuse. She was separated from her children, and hospitalized and sneaking in vodka to drink. From the hospital, Kim came to Union Gospel Mission's LifeChange addiction recovery community. She worked hard to re-build her life and re-connect with her children. She graduated in June of 2002. (Kim, when she entered LifeChange, pictured at left)

After a turbulent childhood, Thomas started using meth at age 17. Thomas was bounced around from place to place as a child, and experienced a lot of instability. After moving to Oregon from Utah, Thomas reconnected with his mom, Kim. Seeing that his mom was progressing through recovery, she became his role model. Thomas entered LifeChange in February of 2006. (Tom, the day he entered LifeChange, pictured at right)

Thomas completed LifeChange and is now enrolled a Portland Community College. He is looking forward to a career in healthcare technology.

Kim has moved to California and looks after her mother and works in food service at a hospital. She stays in touch with LifeChange, and is an inspiration to residents and staff.

Kim and Thomas are truly an example of breaking the cycle of addiction and transformation and restoration of a family.

Help the homeless "Beat the Heat"

While the weather in Portland has been cloudy and rainy, summer will officially begin on June 21. While many welcome the warmer temperatures, for the homeless, summertime can be difficult.

For the first time, Union Gospel Mission is launching "Beat the Heat" a special one day event on Friday June 25 to help supply those on the street with summer clothing- t-shirts and shorts, baseball caps, and bottled water.

Our friends at Cafe Delirium have agreed to provide specialty coffee drinks for our guests to enjoy when they pick up these items.

We need your help. Here are two ways you can help the homeless "Beat the Heat"

1. Collect summer clothing, hats and bottled water and drop them off at Union Gospel Mission (map) or at Cafe Delirium (map)

Meet Russ Silver!

Union Gospel Mission is pleased to have Russ Silver join the Union Gospel Mission staff. Russ will be the Homeless Services and Outreach Coordinator. Although Russ is a new staff member, he is not new to Union Gospel Mission.

Russ graduated from Union Gospel Mission’s LifeChange addiction recovery program in February 2006. While in LifeChange Russ underwent an amazing transformation- Click here to read about Russ's LifeChange journey. (Russ is pictured at left at his LifeChange graduation, with fellow LifeChange grad turned staff member, Dave White) Shortly after graduating, Russ volunteered and spent a year in Biloxi, Mississippi helping to repair the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. During his volunteer experience he met Barbara, a fellow volunteer from Missouri. They married and are now expecting a baby boy on May 1^st.

Russ’s role at Union Gospel Mission will include working collaboratively with LifeChange residents to provide services to the homeless more effectively by building relationships, helping the homeless to find resources and helping those on the edge of homelessness. Russ will also be involved in expanding the Mission services beyond the Old Town/Chinatown neighborhood.

We are very grateful for Russ and his heart to help LifeChange residents and the homeless!

Help the homeless with a "Hope Tote"

Easter is just a few weeks away, and Union Gospel Mission is planning to host a great Easter brunch for the homeless and anyone in need. The Easter brunch provides a nice hot meal and great fellowship, but this year Union Gospel Mission is doing something more.

Union Gospel Mission would like to provide each guest with a "Hope Tote." What is a "Hope Tote"? It's a simple purple bag that we are asking people to fill with essential toiletries and new socks. We are planning to serve anywhere from 600 to 700 on Easter and want to give each guest a Hope Tote bag filled with needed hygiene items and socks.

If you would like a Hope Tote kit, please contact Heidi Hege at heidih@ugmportland.org or give Heidi a call 503-274-4483 ex 513.

The needed items for the Hope Tote include: new and unopened toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, shaving cream, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, lip balm, brush, comb, tissues, shoelaces, lotion, disposable razors and socks.

If you fill up a Hope Tote, you may drop them off at 3 NW Third Avenue in Portland on Saturday March 27 between 10:00 am - 3:00 pm and enjoy our Hope Tote drop-off celebration with pizza and tours of the Mission.

At the Volunteer Encounter you will learn about the many different volunteer opportunities available, tour the Mission and see firsthand the activities at Union Gospel Mission.

The next volunteer Encounter takes place on Tuesday, March 16 from 7:00 pm - 8:15 pm. Encounter events will take place on the third Tuesday of the month throughout the year.

Thrift Store Thursday: Vehicles!

In addition to the great clothes, furnishings, appliances and other items you can purchase at the thrift store, occasionally donated vehicles are for sale. All proceeds from the vehicle sales support the LifeChange addiction recovery community. So, not only do you get a vehicle you are helping a really great group of people.

We have TWO great vehicles currently for sale:

First, is a 1998 Plymouth Voyager Van, clean inside and out, CD Player and 136,036 miles. Asking price is $1,500

The other car is a 1993 Toyota Corolla, with four new tires, looks great inside and out, current tags until 2011 and only 90,962 miles. Asking price is $2,000.

Breaking News: $1 per clothing item sale extended to Friday & Saturday!

The Union Gospel Mission Thrift Store was a hive of activity, as customers enjoyed a special "dollar day" where all clothing items were priced at a dollar each. The event also featured free Subway sandwiches and customers had the chance to meet Dani, the new store manager.

Union Gospel Mission is a busy place. We have been providing day and night emergency shelter for the homeless during the cold snap.

The residents of the LifeChange addiction recovery program have been serving the homeless through the whole experience, plus they are keeping the action going at the thrift store! These are some busy folks.

Christmas is just two weeks away, but you can still find some great deals on Christmas decor at the store!

There are very few places that you may find a Perry Como Christmas album! But there is a great variety of vinyl albums and unique Christmas decor at the Union Gospel Mission thrift store.

The main floor renovation and the new kitchen are almost here! The word "extreme" gets overused in advertising a lot. It seems that adding "extreme" to everything from "extreme sports" to "extreme tacos" makes it more exciting.

However, there are a few bargains at the store that really meet the definition. Such as the $1 clothing racks! Yes, you read that right! one dollar!

What else can you get for a dollar these days? Maybe a McDonald's cheeseburger from the dollar menu, but you eat that and its gone...think of how much more enjoyable it would be to use that dollar for a new shirt or pair of pants! Thrift Store Thursday: Comment Board

Alvin Taylor, thrift store manager extraordinaire and senior LifeChange resident has created a space at the store for shoppers to share their comments.

Here is Alvin and Angel, LifeChange resident and one of the cashiers at the store. The entire store is run by the residents of LifeChange, who receive help from wonderful volunteers and support from staff. The store is a place for LifeChange residents to build new skills, and they do a great job of making the sure the store is well-run and a fun place to shop.

A bonus feature at the check out stand is this vintage picture of Alvin- "back in the day"- judging by the computer equipment, maybe the early '80s?

Here's a table full of what we at Union Gospel Mission call "bric-n-brak" there are plenty of other names you could use, such as

knickknack –noun an ornamental trinket or gimcrack; a bit of bric-a-brac.

tchotchke- noun Slang. an inexpensive souvenir, trinket, or ornament

Definitions courtesy of Dictionary.com. Now you not only have a few new words for the fun and decorative items, tchotchke is a great Scrabble word.

There are many fun small items at the store at extremely reasonable prices, so if you are tchotchke shopping, please check out the store.

New Video! Operation Overcoat 2009

2009's Operation Overcoat was a huge success thanks to generous donors and awesome volunteers! Over 1,400 meals were served and many thousands of articles of clothing were distributed. Medical Teams International provided free dental care, and volunteer hairsylists cut hair. There was also face painting and cotton candy. As you can see from the video it was a very fun event!

Did you know that Union Gospel Mission has volunteers at the Thrift Store? It's true! We have several wonderful volunteers that work alongside our LifeChange recovery residents to make the store run smoothly.

We have some volunteers that are at the store on a regular basis. And, we have some that come for a special project or a short term volunteer opportunity.

This summer a church youth group volunteered to spruce up the outside area of the store and parking lot.

The volunteers are a great blessing to the LifeChange recovery community and to Union Gospel Mission.

"Operation Overcoat" - Not too late to donate!

Union Gospel Mission is gearing up for "Operation Overcoat" a huge clothing give away for the homeless and people in need.

Operation Overcoat will take place on Saturday, September 26 from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. The event takes place in front of the Mission on NW Third Ave., and also expanded to NW Couch Street. The event includes live music from Justin Klump, Nathan Arnold, Aria Anaforian, Laura McGreevy and the SPO dancers. Union Gospel Mission will be serving a barbeque meal of burgers and hot dogs.

In previous years, Union Gospel Mission has served over 2,000 meals and given away tens of thousands of articles of clothing.

It's not too late to help! Donations of all types of clothing, but especially new underwear and socks, backpacks, and coats are needed. Donations of hygiene items are also needed.

Thrift Store Thursday: The Big Picture

If you have been following "Thrift Store Thursday" you've seen the unique and useful items available for sale. But the thrift store is worth a visit for more than the items. The store is run by the residents of the LifeChange addiction recovery community.

As part of recovery, residents take on jobs at the thrift store and at Union Gospel Mission. In these jobs each resident develops job skills and people skills, learning to work together. The store is a successful enterprise because the LifeChange residents take ownership and value the work they do.

Often, customers that get to know the residents know they have made real friends. LifeChange residents at the store share their story, their journey of recovery and will pray for the customers who become not only customers, but friends.

The thrift store is a fun, affordable place to shop, and its also a special place due to the residents of LifeChange.

New Video: Providing meals without a kitchen

It's hard to believe, but its already been one month since Union Gospel Mission started the demolition of its main floor, including the kitchen.

However, the meal services, of about 300 meals per day, plus other services have been on-going. The residents of the LifeChange recovery program have made it happen with hard work and doing more with less.

Thrift Store Thursday! Unique home decor

On the upper floor of the thrift store there is a place we refer to as "Bric and Brac" (or Bric n' Brac) that is full of unique and quirky little items.

For your Thrift Store Thursday enjoyment, here are some samples:

A "shell" vase standing about 12 inches tall, adorned completely with real seashells!

Here is a corncob doll, complete with miniture kitchen utensils, in a glass diorama about 6 inches tall. A little three dimensional knick-knack!

Black and white "statue-ettes"

A floral and humingbird themed clock. You can't tell from the picture, but little hummingbird swings on the pendulum of the clock.

Union Gospel Mission Thrift Store has a unique handcrafted items unavailable anywhere else- custom made flyfishing rods and flies! The making and selling of flyrods was initiated by LifeChange resident Will Anderson. Will, like many residents of LifeChange, is passionate about fishing.

In addition to flyrods, Will and other LifeChange residents create flies and teach each other in a weekly fly tying class.

Carl Parsons awarded Ford Family Foundation scholarship!

Carl Parsons, who graduated from the LifeChange addiction recovery community in March of '09 received news today that he is a recipient of a Ford Family Foundation scholarship. The Ford Re-Start scholarship will cover up 90% of financial need for college.

Carl one of 46 scholars chosen from 641 applicants for this prestigious award.

Carl has made a remarkable journey from the day in March 2005 when he was facing homelessness and standing in the Union Gospel Mission sack lunch line. He was also battling a long and serious addiction to alcohol and painkillers. That day he found out about the LifeChange recovery community and joined that day. He moved into the Mission and became part of LifeChange and worked hard to overcome addiction, heal his past hurts and develop a strong and sustaining Christian faith.

Thank you donors, volunteers, and friends that are such a part of supporting LifeChange! Your help makes real "life change" possible for Carl and other graduates and residents!

Thirft Store Thursday: Vinyl Records!

If you haven't visited the Union Gospel Mission thrift store- you're really missing out. In addition to the usual things, as you see here, clothes, furniture, etc:

The thrift store also has something you probably haven't seen or used in a while- records! old school vinyl records-

Pretty cool stuff! You can see a Harry Belafonte record, and a soundtrack to John Wayne movies. And...

What party could be complete unless you had polka music?....But wait there's more!

A small collection of 8 track tapes for sale (for those of you under age 25, "8 tracks" were the way people listened to music in the 1970s, before itunes) As you can see there is Barbra Streisand, and a lesser-known groovy '70s artist, Peter Sarstedt.

As you can see the thrift store has a lot of great and unique items. And, it's full of exceptional people- its entirely run by residents of the LifeChange recovery community. Also, all proceeds from the store support the cost of LifeChange recovery.

Big News: Union Gospel Mission to rebuild ground level of Old Mission

It's an exciting time! Union Gospel Mission has selected Todd Hess Building Co., as the contractor for a complete re-build of the Union Gospel Mission's main floor including a complete remodel of the kitchen. The "old Mission" refers to the building that Union Gospel Mission has occupied since 1937 at 15 NW Third Ave. The old building is connected to the LifeChange Center, and is located at 3 NW Third Ave.

The project entirely redesigns the ground floor of the old Mission by constructing a new enlarged commercial kitchen, upgrading the dining room, adding 1st floor food storage and refrigeration, upgrading the ADA restroom that is made available to the homeless, remodeling the contact booth and clothing room, and replacing a fire exit. This final phase completes the combined LifeChange Center new construction and old Mission remodel at 3rd and Burnside. The project is set to begin in mid-June.

As you can see, its a huge undertaking! We are half way to our goal for the cost of this project, plus we will maintain the same level of meal service during the remodel, which will nearly double the cost of providing meals.

Compassion Southeast- A chance to reach out

Join Union Gospel Mission in reaching out to our neighbors in Southeast Portland at Compassion Southeast. The Compassion Southeast event takes place Saturday, June 20 at Woodmere Elementary School, 7900 SE Duke St. from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. Volunteers are needed!

Compassion Southeast will provide basic medical and dental services, connect with other social service agencies, and a free lunch for people in need. New this year- some free pet care services.

Annual banquet boosts support for kitchen

Union Gospel Mission's Annual banquet last Saturday boosted the support for the kitchen remodel project which will soon be underway.

The banquet featured an inspiring and thought provoking talk by Christian author Frank Peretti, and music by Justin Klump.

Generous supporters stepped up and provided a big boost in funding for the total remodel of Union Gospel Mission's outdated kitchen.

Our banquet features noted Christian author Frank Peretti, author of "This Present Darkness" "The Oath" and the Cooper Kids adventure series. Musical entertainment will be provided by Justin Klump.

The banquet takes place this Saturday, April 25 at the Oregon Convention Center. There is no charge to attend, however, the banquet is a fundraiser for Union Gospel Mission.

Homelessness on the rise in Portland

According to a new report homelessness in Portland has risen 13% since 2007. According to our Mission Managers, LifeChange residents who serve the homeless, there have been many new homeless faces in the past few months. Many are new to the streets and looking for help.

That's the plan for Easter Sunday, April 12 at Union Gospel Mission at 15 NW Third from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. The meal is free and open to anyone in need.

Graduate Profile: Carl Parsons

“In LifeChange, I really discovered who I was intended to be…it was about uncovering God’s plan.”

Carl Parsons is looking back at four years of hard work, joy, fellowship, depression and everything in between. Ready to graduate from Union Gospel Mission’s LifeChange addiction recovery program this March, a future he might not have imagined four years ago in March 2005 as he stood in line for a sack lunch from the Mission. (Carl, pictured at right, the day he stood in line for a sack lunch and joined LifeChange)

“I was at the end of the line, I was out of money, had burned all my bridges and had no more money stay in this hotel on Sandy Boulevard where I had been living. I knew about Missions, so I came downtown looking for help. I saw about 250 people in line for a sack lunch. I came to the door, and I asked about help, and was told to come back later to apply for LifeChange,” Carl recalls.

Carl’s road to the sack lunch line at the Mission in 2005 was filled with battles with alcohol and painkillers and a life of struggle to find his way.

Carl was born and raised in New Hampshire by a single mom. His mom was a nurse working long hours, so Carl’s grandparents stepped in and help raise Carl and they were a major influence in his life.

“When I was 12, my grandma died. She was the matriarch, she held things together. When she died it was hard on my Grandpa, and things fell apart. I moved out of my home at age 12 and stayed with cousins and friends and struggled my way through High School and graduated in 1991.”

Carl then enlisted in the Marines, but because of a bad car accident Carl was discharged and unable to serve.

“Serving in the Marines had become something to hang on to, an identity, somewhere to belong. Things went downhill, I started drinking heavily and taking painkillers and then I got involved in criminal activity.”

Facing criminal charges, Carl fled New Hampshire for New York. He was doing day labor, living in some bad places and drinking heavily. Things appeared to turn around for Carl when he became involved at St. Paul’s House a Christian organization, where Carl worked for several years.

Carl was estranged from his family, but received a call from his mom that his stepfather was ill. Carl decided to go back to New Hampshire and face his legal issues.

He was able to get a job, a car, an apartment and he and a girlfriend were expecting a baby. After their daughter Saydi was born, Carl’s girlfriend left, and Carl was a single father for several years, until Saydi’s mom came back into her daughter’s life. At this time Carl was going back to a life of drinking, and late nights. Carl’s parents confronted him, which lead to a huge blow up.

“I flipped out. I left and stayed with friends, and I bottomed out, I burned all these bridges. I had a friend who lived in Portland and he encouraged me to come here. When I arrived I realized he was in worse shape than I was, he had a serious drug problem.”

Within a few months of arriving in Portland, Carl was in LifeChange. His experience in LifeChange was filled opportunities to grow and many hard challenges.

“I had a love/hate relationship with LifeChange at times. LifeChange was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but it was the most rewarding.”

Today, Carl is attending community college and seeking an Associates degree in business.

For the future Carl plans to marry, hopefully have a job in a ministry that impacts people’s lives, and live a simple life. Carl is working to build a relationship with his daughter Saydi.

“LifeChange changed my values. I used to look at temporary material things, now I see the eternal and the value of working for God’s Kingdom.” (Carl today, pictured at left)

LifeChange graduate profile: Steve

LifeChange graduation is coming up on March 29. Two great guys are graduating, Carl and Steve.

Here is Steve's story:

“I just hoped I’d pass out and never wake up,” Steve said of some very dark days in February and March of 2005. Steve was drinking heavily every day, barely eating anything and moving from one cheap motel to another in Southeast Portland. Severely depressed after his “functional” alcoholism had transformed into all day drinking, and a loss of his marriage and a good job he walked away from.

Steve had always been a hard worker. He worked in the grocery business since he was a teen, and had worked as a delivery truck driver. His work ethic came from his parents who adopted Steve as an infant. Steve grew up in Beaverton and had a normal childhood. He recalled his Grandmother making him practice the organ after school, and working for his Dad’s toy distributorship. Steve recalls starting drinking in High School at about age 15, just to “be cool, fit in” and was sneaking alcohol from his parents.

“My mom would pick me up from school and take me to go work, I think to try to keep me out of trouble,” Steve says.

He married young and he and his wife had three sons before they divorced. Steve married again and he and his second wife had two boys. Steve traces his downward spiral to getting laid-off in 2002. He found himself living on unemployment and starting his drinking first thing in the morning.

By Christmas 2003, his entire family had become alarmed at Steve’s drinking. His mother, stepfather, sisters, wife and in-laws confronted Steve in an intervention, demanding that he not only to get serious about recovery, but to seek medical help because he looked so thin and unhealthy.

“When they confronted me like that I was so angry, I was furious. I rejected what they were saying, and my wife moved out and took the boys, took money, and I was basically left with nothing. I was angry about it at the time, but looking back I know they were desperate. When I see pictures from back then, I did look terrible,” Steve recalls. (see picture at right)

After that confrontation Steve made several half-hearted attempts at recovery to appease his family, and to remain in diversion from a DUI charge. He managed to find sober housing and a good job as a receiving clerk, but his divorce and a confrontation with another resident caused Steve to walk away from his job and start his drinking binge and motel hopping.

Even in the darkest days in motels, Steve was drawn to look at the Bibles in the nightstands.

“I didn’t really understand the Bible, but I was drawn to it. I feel like God intervened.”

Steve called his sister Jodi, who had been receiving the LifeChange newsletter. Jodi helped direct Steve to LifeChange.

As he started recovery in LifeChange Steve recalls being scared, and watching others, and worked on being obedient. He found that he was transforming spiritually.

LifeChange had its struggles, Steve recalls, “the kitchen job assignment was hard for me, sometimes it was hard to get along with others. I did enjoy working at the thrift store.”

Looking back after four years, Steve says, “Being in LifeChange deepened my relationship with God, helped me understand the bible. I’m able to build healthy relationships, I’ve learned humility, and I’m a better dad.”

Looking forward, Steve plans to spend time with his two younger boys and to build relationships with his adult sons. He is attending truck driving school. He hopes one day to be married again, but is in no hurry to be in a relationship. He is enjoying getting involved at New Song church in Portland.

“I’m never going to be the guy giving a sermon from the pulpit, but I can minister to people. One on one I just tell them my story, what God has done for me.” (Steve today, pictured at left)

Time flies at Union Gospel Mission

It is hard to believe it's already March. Here at Union Gospel Mission, the action has been non-stop as residents of LifeChange provided "above and beyond" emergency shelter over the winter.

Now we are looking ahead to a few important events: The graduation of two LifeChange members on March 29, a wonderful Easter brunch on April 12 and our annual fundraising banquet on April 25.

Cold weather, slick roads, school and event cancellations are all problems many of us face during the freezing cold weather in Portland. These are minor annoyances when you are homeless. During this freeze Union Gospel Mission is offering an emergency overnight shelter to the homeless. The dining room at the Mission is a place to sleep out of the cold.

Wow! 1,101 meals served at Thanksgiving

The day began early, as crews came to set up the 120' foot NW Natural Gas tent at 6:00 am and volunteers began preparing a the meal...

Over 300 volunteers were involved in preparing the Thanksgiving meal.

More than an hour before the event began, a line stretched along the block at W. Burnside street.

The NW Natural Gas tent was quickly filled as volunteer served 1,101 meals in just 4 short hours.

Yesterday, we only had 80 turkeys, but by Thanksgiving morning, nearly 300 turkeys had poured into Union Gospel Mission! We are blessed and humbled by the generosity of our community this Thanksgiving!!

Thanksgiving Dinner for 1,000 at Union Gospel Mission

Thanksgiving is a mere 48 hours away. Many are preparing for friends and family to arrive for the big meal.

At Union Gospel Mission we are preparing for a big meal- a REALLY big meal, enough to feed over 1,000 people.

Here are the numbers:

100 Turkeys
175 lbs of stuffing
450 lbs mashed potatoes
60 gallons of gravy
200 lbs of yams
200 lbs mixed vegetables
2,000 dinner rolls
225 pies
60 gallons of juice

As I type at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, we are short 20 turkeys. We should be able to make it work with 80, but it would be nice to have the 100 turkeys to ensure we can generously heap the turkey meat on every plate, and provide some turkeys for food boxes for individuals and families in need.

Many served at Operation Overcoat

Nearly 1,500 meals were served and many thousands of articles of clothing were given away at Operation Overcoat 2008

A meal of hamburgers, hot dogs, and macaroni salad was served.

Hundreds of people received clothes, shoes, hygiene items and blankets.

The crowd was entertained by the SPO dancers and other musical acts that performed throughout the event.

Underwear needed for a good cause!

Union Gospel Mission is seeking churches willing to have an "Undie Sunday" on Sunday September 21 and collect new socks and underwear for men, women and children who are homeless or in need. This is part of "Operation Overcoat" a annual clothing giveaway on Saturday September 27. At Operation Overcoat thousands of articles of clothing are given away.

Union Gospel Mission is also seeking businesses willing to have an "Undie Monday" to collect new socks and underwear.

Are you ready to have an "undie" day at your church or business?

Here's what to do:

1. Contact Stacy Kean at stacyk@ugmportland.org or 503-274-4483 to let Union Gospel Mission know your group is participating.

2. Let all your friends at work and/or church know! Ask them to bring new socks, underwear and even hygiene items on "Undie Sunday" or "Undie Monday"

Summer vacation

The LifeChange Recovery Community is taking a summer vacation to the Oregon Coast. Since the LifeChange community is continually busy running the Union Gospel Mission thrift store and handling services at the Mission the annual trip to the beach is an much needed break before the fall, which is the busiest time of year at Union Gospel Mission.

We hope all the friends of Union Gospel Mission are enjoying their summer as well!

What a difference two weeks can make

Just two weeks ago, it was unseasonably chilly, with gray skies and rain. Today, the sun is bright, and there is talk of the weather reaching 90 degrees.

Many people think of donating to or volunteering with Union Gospel Mission during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season, which is great, and a huge blessing.

While Union Gospel Mission does provide more special meals and events during the holiday season, the need is year round. We have people coming to our door today for a sack lunch at 6:30 am or for a hot dinner at our chapel service at 7:15 pm. All day people come seeking clothing and maybe a pastry, a cup of coffee or a drink of water.

Our LifeChange addiction recovery program helps men and women living at the Mission everyday. LifeChange residents work at the thrift store and at the Mission, they also work together in recovery everyday.

If you want to volunteer, donate clothing or food or make a financial donation, it is welcome anytime- even on sunny May days!

New socks and underwear needed

Union Gospel Mission REALLY needs new socks and underwear to give to the homeless or people in need who come to the door of the Mission seeking clothing on a daily basis.

Union Gospel Mission has a "community clothing closet" that has all types of clothing: pants, shirts, jackets, blankets, and new socks and underwear. People in need of these items can come to the door and receive them. However, over the past week or two there just hasn't been enough socks and underwear to meet demand. As many as 30 requests for these items per day have been turned down.

Why? There are a couple of reasons: clothing donations have dropped off, and this spring has been unseasonably cool and wet increasing demand for these items.

Marc, who is a member of the LifeChange recovery community here at Union Gospel Mission, has the role of meeting the needs of people who come to the door of the Mission. His observation was that many of the people who rely on the Mission for clothing don't have a place to store clothes, nor do they have a way to wash their clothing.

So if you can drop off some new socks and underwear at 15 NW Third Avenue in Portland that would be greatly appreciated! Easter re-cap

Easter Sunday was a soggy one, but it didn't stop Union Gospel Mission's Easter Brunch! 650 meals were served.

The crowd was steady throughout the day....

Over 200 volunteers helped prepare and serve the meal. We received a great donation of ham from Carlton Farms, and many Easter donations through the mail to support the meal. Thanks to volunteers and donors people who might have spent the holiday alone in the rain instead enjoyed a wonderful Easter meal at Union Gospel Mission.

We don't need these pretty, colorful kind (though they are nice!) What Union Gospel Mission needs are 1,500 regular eggs (yes, over a thousand!) to provide an Easter Sunday brunch to people who are homeless or in need.

The menu for the Easter brunch is ham, eggs, biscuits and country gravy, mixed fruit, juice and coffee. Plastic forks and spoons are also needed.

What Union Gospel Mission, and over a hundred wonderful volunteers, want to do this Easter Sunday is to provide a special brunch, and a welcoming place for people who are homeless, in need of food or otherwise would spend the holiday alone. Typically, Union Gospel Mission provides between 600 and 700 meals on Easter Sunday.

LifeChange Graduation

Preparations are underway for a wonderful celebration on March 9. Five residents of the LifeChange addiction recovery program are graduating! Each has spent an average of about four years in recovery. Four of them used meth and one used prescription drugs as well as heroin. They all had some pretty awful experiences in the midsts of their addiction. But today they have completely re-built their lives through some very serious and hard work in LifeChange. They've come very far...

So, congratulations Doug, Brian, Daniel, Brek and Kurt! Stay tuned to hear more about their amazing stories of recovery.

Learning to have fun- clean and sober

The LifeChange addiction recovery residents took to the slopes on February 4, for the annual "snow day."

In LifeChange, the focus is on comprehensive recovery. Not only do residents learn job skills, computer skills, and other valuable life skills, they also learn a new way to have fun. In the past, many associated "fun" or "partying" with the use of drugs and alcohol.

During community recreational events, LifeChange residents get a break from their busy schedules and have a chance to see that fun doesn't need to involve drugs or alcohol.

Blankets, coffee needed during cold

The air is frigid here in Portland. It looks like the cold weather is going to continue through the week.

Union Gospel Mission serves as a temporary overflow shelter during the cold weather. Typically, Union Gospel Mission doesn't offer temporary shelter. To live at Union Gospel Mission a person needs to be part of our addiction recovery community, LifeChange. But, when it gets this cold, the Mission is an overflow night shelter with around thirty homeless people sleeping on the dining hall floor.

We give the blankets to people in the morning, and we hand the blankets out all day, so we need donations of blankets and sleeping bags. Since people are sleeping on the floor donations of mats would be great.

It would also be great to have donations of coffee (caffinated is preferred, rather than decaf!) and oatmeal, because its an easy meal to fix in the morning.

The residents of the LifeChange recovery community are really making this happen, they are staying up night shifts to monitor the guests and really showing compassion to people in need.
