Thrift Store Thursday! Busy Season

Union Gospel Mission is a busy place. We have been providing day and night emergency shelter for the homeless during the cold snap.

The residents of the LifeChange addiction recovery program have been serving the homeless through the whole experience, plus they are keeping the action going at the thrift store! These are some busy folks.

Christmas is just two weeks away, but you can still find some great deals on Christmas decor at the store!

There are very few places that you may find a Perry Como Christmas album! But there is a great variety of vinyl albums and unique Christmas decor at the Union Gospel Mission thrift store.

Add the thrift store to you list of shopping stops. Located at 11611 SW Pacific Hwy in Tigard, across from the Tigard Cinemas. Call the thrift store at 503-639-6488.

Union Gospel Mission offers emergency shelter during freeze

Cold weather, slick roads, school and event cancellations are all problems many of us face during the freezing cold weather in Portland. These are minor annoyances when you are homeless. During this freeze Union Gospel Mission is offering an emergency overnight shelter to the homeless. The dining room at the Mission is a place to sleep out of the cold.

Union Gospel Mission needs blankets, coffee and pastries for the emergency shelter. Please drop off these items at 15 N.W. Third Avenue, or call 503-274-4483.

You can make a donation online to help at www.ugmportland.org

Blankets, coffee needed during cold

The air is frigid here in Portland. It looks like the cold weather is going to continue through the week.

Union Gospel Mission serves as a temporary overflow shelter during the cold weather. Typically, Union Gospel Mission doesn't offer temporary shelter. To live at Union Gospel Mission a person needs to be part of our addiction recovery community, LifeChange. But, when it gets this cold, the Mission is an overflow night shelter with around thirty homeless people sleeping on the dining hall floor.

We give the blankets to people in the morning, and we hand the blankets out all day, so we need donations of blankets and sleeping bags. Since people are sleeping on the floor donations of mats would be great.

It would also be great to have donations of coffee (caffinated is preferred, rather than decaf!) and oatmeal, because its an easy meal to fix in the morning.

If you or someone you know would like to donate blankets, coffee or anything they can be dropped off at the Mission at 15 NW Third Avenue in Portland, or call us at 503-274-4483.

The residents of the LifeChange recovery community are really making this happen, they are staying up night shifts to monitor the guests and really showing compassion to people in need.

We Need Blankets! We had great volunteers here today!

This is turning out to be a busy Friday! First of all, with the cold weather coming, Union Gospel Mission may become a temporary overflow shelter for the homeless. If that happens we REALLY NEED BLANKETS. We don't have cots so we make bedrolls out of blankets, and right now, we don't have nearly enough. If you can drop off blankets, please do so at 15 NW Third Ave. in Portland (nearest cross street is Burnside) or give us a call at 503-274-4483 for more information.

We had some awesome volunteers here today from adidas. They had (and are still having) a clothing and hygiene item drive. They are sending a second volunteer team on December 14. This is a huge blessing! We will be handing out the clothing during the cold weather and also as gift bags on Christmas Day.

Here's the adidas volunteer group assembling clothing bags. They brought a lot of clothing that will help people who are homeless or in need.

The volunteers from adidas also assembled hygiene kits to give away. Hygiene kits consist of toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, deordorant, and lotion. These kits are given to the homeless and will be part of the Christmas Day give away.

It was really awesome to have the adidas group volunteering and it will make a great difference to people in need this holiday season.

The holidays and the cold weather are times of great need for the homeless, so donations of blankets, clothing, hygiene items and food are very appreciated. Donations can also be made online at http://www.ugmportland.org/donate.html

Thank you and God Bless...
